Acciona has awarded ground engineering contractor Van Elle a £8M foundation works contract on Enfinium’s Kelvin waste to energy facility in Sandwell.

Van Elle will be installing and testing more than 1,000 rotary and continuous flight auger (CFA) piles to help build the new waste to energy facility in West Bromwich, Sandwell.

The piling contract, awarded by Acciona, is worth more than £8M.

In November of last year, waste to energy operator Enfinium named Acciona the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the Kelvin facility.

Once completed, Kelvin will be a combined heat and power facility capable of processing up to 395,000t of residual, post-recycled waste per annum to generate 47MW of partially renewable, baseload electricity. This could help power more than 95,000 UK homes and businesses.

Sandwell Council gave the facility planning permission in September 2019, while the Environment Agency awarded it an environmental permit in July 2019.

Van Elle will also be installing 200m of concrete guide walls, secant piled retaining walls for two bunkers and removing approximately 16,000m3 of spoil on the project.

The 30 week piling programme will start on site this month. For the works, Van Elle will use its new Llamada P-160TA rig, as well as two SR75 rotary piling rigs and cranes.

At its peak the project will require two CFA and two rotary rigs with cranes and excavators to ensure the project is delivered safely and on time.

Van Elle piling director Malcolm O’Sullivan said: “We’re delighted to be working with Acciona to deliver the piling works for this project, which draws on our expertise and experience in rotary bored and CFA piling and further strengthens Van Elle’s standing as the largest ground engineering contractor in the UK.”

Acciona project director for Kelvin Scott Edmondson added: “Van Elle’s appointment for the piling works at Kelvin is an important milestone for the project as it marks the start of construction.”
