E-bikes have many applications, but pedalling along fairways is not generally considered one of those.

Most e-bikes are used by mountain bikers who need to ride more trails, in less time. Or riders who are recovering from injury. Cargo e-bikes have great potential, but they aren’t often seen outside European cities.

But there is an unexplored realm where the e-bike works a treat: golf. With golf courses under pressure to show greater environmental awareness, players can now do their part by choosing to use an e-bike instead of the traditional golf cart.

Super73 is a Californian custom e-bike specialist, and its new Topgolf S2 model will make you think very differently about golf’s potential coolness factor.

With pedal-assistance from a very potent 2000W rear-hub motor and 960Wh battery pack, the Topgolf S2 will make swift going of your local course. This e-bike has 120km worth of range in eco-mode, which should be good for about 20 rounds of golf.

One of the Topgolf S2’s most notable features is its huge tyres to ensure excellent riding stability. And that’s important, when you are carrying a golf bag on one side of the bike.

Although the Topgolf S2 isn’t light at 33kg, it’s a lot lighter than any golf cart, and those massive tyres help distribute the load, reducing point pressure on fairways and greens.

Super73’s product team selected Vee Speedster whitewall tyres. These are junior BMX-sized tyres in diameter, at 20”, but massively wider, at 4” across. Compared to most mountain bike tyres (29 x 2.4”), these Vee Speedster tyres have a smaller profile but much larger casing and cross-section.

The Topgolf S2 bike has a lower centre of gravity thanks to its smaller diameter tyres. And their fat profile, with all that air volume, leave very little trace of you rolling over some moist grass on the fairway.

Design details include a golf ball speaker under the top tube and vivid green frame colour, making the Topgolf S2 e-bike blend in terrifically with its intended surroundings.

The Topgolf S2's triple-clamp coil-sprung fork has more than enough suspension travel to prevent a loss of control, if you do end up riding into the rough, or a bunker, by accident.
