Cox High alums Bryce Ernsberger and Brett Rosenmeier fell in the first main-draw round of the AVP Virginia Beach Open on Saturday.

After advancing through the qualifying rounds Friday in their hometown to reach the main bracket of 32 pairs, they lost 15-21, 21-16, 15-10 to 11th-seeded Brandon Joyner and Angel Dache.

In the back draw, Ernsberger and Rosenmeier edged Jake Urrutia and Bruno Amorim 18-21, 21-13, 15-13 before being eliminated with a defeat to Jacob Landel and Lev Priima.

Ernsberger played for Marymount University, while Rosenmeier competed for Hawaii.

Kevin Knight, a Suffolk resident, and partner Josue Castillo beat 14th-seeded Bradley Connors and T.J. Jurko 21-9, 21-19 before falling 21-17, 21-14 to the third seeds, Cody Caldwell and Bill Kolinske. Knight and Castillo then were eliminated with a 21-13, 22-20 loss to Mark Bucknam and Jake Fleming.

The winners’ bracket quarterfinals will feature teams seeded second, third, fifth and eighth. Top-seeded Timothy Brewster and Kyle Friend remain alive in the contenders’ bracket, while fourth-seeded Jacob Landel and Lev Priima faced a 19-21, 21-18, 15-10 upset by 23rd-seeded Jake MacNeil and Alexander Russell.

The event — one of 16 stops during the AVP’s 2022 season — concludes Sunday with the women’s and men’s championship matches at 3:30 and 4:30 p.m., respectively, at the beach near 5th Street at the Oceanfront.

Larissa and Lili Maestrini entered the tournament as the top-seeded women’s team, and the Brazilian duo have so far proven they belong in that top spot.

Larissa, a three-time Olympian who won bronze representing her native Brazil in 2012, teamed with Lili, her wife, to win the AVP Tour Series Muskegon Open in early June, the AVP Tour Series Denver Open in early July, the AVP Tour Series Atlantic City Open in late July, and the pair put themselves in position to win for a fourth time this season by advancing to the winners’ bracket quarterfinals in Virginia Beach.

The Maestrinis topped 16th-seeded Heather Friesen and Agnieszka Pregowska 21-16, 21-9 and upended ninth-seeded Katie Horton and Brook Bauer 21-19, 21-19. They will play fifth-seeded Aurora Davis and Teegan Van Gunst in a 9 a.m. match Sunday with a semifinal berth on the line.

Other women’s teams advancing to the winners’ bracket quarterfinals were second-seeded Carly Kan/Kaitlyn Malaney, third-seeded Allie Wheeler/Deahna Kraft and fifth-seeded Aurora Davis/Teegan Van Gunst.

Matches will resume Sunday morning at 7.

Old Dominion lost 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-12) to tournament host Northern Arizona to finish 0-3 in the Monarchs’ season-opening weekend in Flagstaff. Teresa Atilano had 29 assists and 12 digs, while Anna Burkhardt had 13 digs and Gerren Tomlin made eight kills.

Friday night, the Monarchs lost 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-22) to Utah Tech of the Western Athletic Conference as Myah Conway had eight kills and Bailey Burgess had five kills and four blocks. Burkhardt had eight digs, while Atilano had 12 assists, two aces and six digs.

Norfolk State lost 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-16) to East Carolina (2-1) in the Spartans’ final match of the Pirate Invitational. Carla Hernandez had 12 kills and Shonte Seale nine for NSU (0-3), while Sydney McCree had 19 assists. ECU’s Angeles Alderete had 15 kills and 13 digs.

William & Mary finished 0-3 at South Florida’s season-opening tournament in Tampa with a 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-13, 25-14) loss to Ball State (3-0). Freshman outside hitter Sarah Callender, a Tabb High graduate, had 11 kills and 15 digs for her first Tribe double-double, while Nicole Smith had nine kills.

Also for W&M, Anna Porter had a match-high 18 digs, Emma Minnick had 18 assists and Amy Schwem added 16 assists. For the Cardinals, Megan Wielonski had 45 assists and Natalie Risi had 10 kills and 12 digs.

Virginia alum Alexander Ritschard advanced through qualifying to earn a spot in the main draw of the U.S. Open in New York.

Ritschard, a Swiss player ranked No. 185 in the world, won 6-1, 6-2 against No. 220 Evan Furness of France, defeated 19-year-old American wild-card entry Zachary Svajda 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 and ousted No. 109 Franco Agamenone of France 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

Ritschard will face sixth-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime in the third match on the Grandstand Court on Monday.
