Contractors have made progress on the B15 highway expansion project in Rosenheim, Germany, despite encountering difficult ground conditions.
The B15 highway is being extended to move long-distance lorry traffic away from the city of Rosenheim. The project includes a 11.5km long bybass, the Westtangente Rosenheim. In addition, a railway overpass is being built at Wernhardsberg to take the road over the Munich-Rosenheim line.
The Spezialtiefbau BW 8.2 Rosenheim joint venture, comprising Bauer Spezialtiefbau and Menard is carrying out the specialist foundation engineering works on the scheme. It was commissioned for the works by Habau Hoch- und Tiefbaugesellschaft and MCE. The project client is the Rosenheim State Building Authority,
The ground at the site consists of Rosenheim marine clay. It is a fine-grained, soft and water-logged soil with low load-bearing capacity.
As a result, the load of the bridge structure will be transferred into the subsoil with the help of mixed foundations consisting of piles, vertical drains and displacement columns.
The JV is installing 74 fully cased large-diameter bored piles for the bridge foundations. The piles have a diameter of 1,200mm and are being bored down to a depth of 40m.
It is using a Bauer BG 46 and a BG 39 drilling rig for the works.
In addition, the vertical drains and displacement columns will help improve the load-bearing capacity of the marine clay.
Bauer project manager Klaus Stauber said: “This difficult and sensitive soil places very high demands on the pile installation, as well as the accompanying documentation.
“This is because Rosenheim marine clay is highly unstable due to its properties.”
The marine clay was created approximately 10,000 years ago, after the last ice age. When the Inn glacier melted, a lake was formed, generating these fine-grained deposits.
The project is expected to be completed this summer.
