The F91 Kepler GitLab project has turned a Casio F91W into a smartwatch, with an OLED display and the ability to receive notifications. The maker, Pegor, has redesigned the classic Casio model, replacing the original internals but keeping the case. The project uses a specially designed circuit board, which is available as a template.

A Bluetooth-capable MCU is added to the device, enabling you to use the gadget to make Bluetooth calls. It’s worth noting that the device only operates through Bluetooth diagnostic apps, such as nRF Connect. The upgraded OLED SSD1306 screen requires a special adapter to connect it to the PCB.

The modified watch can display full-screen notifications for incoming calls and text messages and has a notifications bar. Currently, you can only use one button to wake the device, and the battery lasts for around 15 days when you use the gadget several times a day. However, the battery will need to be replaced as it is not rechargeable.

After working on the watch for a year, the maker is handing the project over to the community. Pegor has suggested a to-do list, including creating a phone app and improving the battery life. Another project that upgrades the Casio F91W watch has been designed by Oddly Specific Objects; you can view the project and pre-order parts via Crowd Supply.
