Bauer Technologies, a subsidiary of Bauer Group, started installing piles for the new quay wall development on the River Tees last month.

Construction and civil engineering company Graham awarded Bauer Technologies the South Bank Quay piling contract.

Once complete, the South Bank Quay will form part of the Teesworks offshore wind hub. It will support the operation of the Dogger Bank wind farm, located 129km miles off the North East coast.

Bauer’s scope of works covers 156 1.8m diameter tubular steel combi wall king piles, within 2,000mm diameter bores, installed to a depth of up to 27m.

In addition, the contactor will be undertaking an extensive programme of rotary bored and continuous flight auger (CFA) pre-boring works for the combi wall sheet pile infill walls and rear sheet pile anchor wall. It will also install 410 rotary bored bearing piles, at 900mm and 780mm diameters, up to a depth of 30m, as part of works on the platform.

For the works, it will use two BG45 and two BG30 rotary bored rigs, together with two CFA rigs. The piling is expected to take approximately six months to complete.

Graham began development of the heavy-lift quay in October of last year. It is working on behalf of client South Tees Development Cooperation.

The 1.2km quay will support GE Renewable Energy’s wind turbine blade facility. It will also play a critical role in the loading out and shipping of the 107m long blades for the Dogger Bank wind farm.

The quay forms part of a wider advanced manufacturing and industrial space set to be built on 182ha of land next to the wharf.

Fugro carried out site investigations of the bed of the River Tees for the scheme in November 2020.
