An overturned tanker on U.S. Route 30 closes a portion of the highway in both directions on Friday, Sept. 15.

At 4:15 p.m., ODOT announced US 30 eastbound and westbound, at S Elyria Rd, has all lanes open to traffic. It was previously closed due to an incident.

PLAIN TOWNSHIP, Wayne County — One person was seriously injured and a significant section of U.S Route 30 remained closed Friday afternoon following the overturning of a tanker truck.

The highway was closed between State Route 89 in Ashland County and U.S. Route 250 in Wayne County around 4:30 a.m. Friday morning.

A state highway trooper with the Wayne County post said it would remain closed until around 2 or 3 p.m. while crews cleaned up the site.

The Ohio Department of Transportation posted a detour route as "U.S. 250 to SR 89 to U.S. 30."

"Motorists are advised to drive with caution and to seek an alternate route," ODOT said.

The driver of the semi, a 49-year-old Wooster man, was life-flighted to a hospital in Akron to be treated for "serious injuries."

As of noon Friday, there was no update on the driver's condition.

An OSHP press release said the driver was traveling west in a semi, which was pulling a tank full of "highly combustible petroleum product."

"Just west of the intersection of Elyria Road, the truck and trailer traveled into the grass median and overturned. The load, later determined to be a highly combustible petroleum product, was leaking from the ruptured trailer," according to a press release from OSHP.

The spill prompted responders from New Pittsburg Fire Department, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, Ohio Department of Transportation, the Wayne County Highway Department and HAZMAT mitigation teams from Richland, Ashland and Stark counties.
