The rotary rig count in the United States totaled 759 in the first week of September, according to industry watcher Baker Hughes.

In its most recent report, Houston-based Baker Hughes said the combined number of oil and gas rigs in the U.S. declined by one from its late August count total.

A year ago, the rig count total in the U.S. was 503.

Rigs on land in the U.S. last week totaled 741, nearly 500 more than were reported in the same period in 2021. There were three rigs counted in inland waters and 15 counted offshore. Rigs drilling for oil in the U.S. totaled 591, a decrease of five from the previous week. There were 166 counted drilling for gas, an increase of four; two were classified as “miscellaneous” rigs.

Traditional vertical wells being drilled totaled 24, while there were 43 identified as directional and 692 identified as horizontal.

The rig count in Oklahoma decreased by one last week to total 64, Baker Hughes said. In early September last year there were 32 wells being drilled in the state.

There were 359 rigs counted in Texas, 109 in New Mexico, 64 in Louisiana and 39 in North Dakota. Fewer were counted in Alaska, California, Colorado, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming.

In reporting major basin variances, Baker Hughes said 340 rigs were in the Permian, 71 in Haynesville, 71 in the Eagle Ford, 35 in Marcellus, 41 in Williston, 21 in Cana Woodford, 17 in DJ-Niobrara, 12 in Utica, four in Ardmore Woodford, seven in Arkoma Woodford, three in Barnett, seven in Granite Wash and two in the Mississippian.

Baker Hughes counted 205 rigs drilling in Canada, a decrease of three from the previous week.

The total rig count for North America was pegged at 964, a decrease of four from the previous week’s total of 968.

Baker Hughes has issued the rotary rig counts as a service to the petroleum industry since 1944.
