Bauer Engineering India has constructed a cut off wall for a hydroelectric power plant on a major river in Nepal.
The new hydroelectric power plant on the Arun River, which runs from Tibet through the Himalayas into China, and has the greatest snow and ice-covered area of any Nepalese river basin, is expected to produce up to 900MW of electricity.
Bauer Spezialtiefbau subsidiary Bauer Engineering India was tasked with building the cut off wall at the Arun III HEP hydroelectric project by Indian company Jaiprakash Associates.
The cut off wall will create a seal and reduce seepage of water below the upstream cofferdam and in the left and right abutments.
Bauer will also carry out 3,500m of drilling and injection work on the cofferdam. It will undertake pore injections in the granular construction soil, composed of sand, gravel, rubble and boulders, using a method of tube-à-manchette and annular grouting.
Bauer project manager Satish Kumar said: “Using the pore injections, we are able to fill the pores in the very loose soil with cement slurry and thereby reduce its permeability.
“Injections require a high degree of quality assurance and quality control. We are able to meet the strict demands thanks to our many years of experience.”
On top of this, Bauer will carry out rock grouting to fill gaps, fractures and cavities in the rock.
The plant’s remote location in the Himalayas also poses logistical challenges. Snow melt in March causes the water level in the river to rise, making work more difficult and meaning that the team must work to a very tight schedule.
